Wheels were essential to help carry heavy weights on people's heads. In Portuguese villages with no water supply it was common to see women carry water pitchers on their heads quite naturally. This practice could be seen as late as the mid 20th century. Wheels were homemade by everyone. Wheels these days are used as a mat under serving dishes or simply as decoration.
