The city of Coimbra is located on a hill by the Mondego River.
It was first important in Roman times and was the seat of the Portuguese reign in the Middle Ages.
Its University was founded in the 13th century (1290) as was Salamanca (1218) and the Sorbonne (1257) following Oxford (1167) and Bologne, the oldest in the world (1088).
