Vila Nova de Poiares, 30 km from Coimbra, was built on the crossroads of two of the major Roman roads in Portugal - the mystic N2, the Portuguese equivalent to Route 66 and the N17 which takes you all the way to Spain.
Its history goes back to megalithic times.
It is most famous for its black clay art and also for a very special goat meat dish cooked in it called "Chanfana".
